چکیده

A recent trend in the layout design of unit load warehouses is the application of layouts without conventional parallel pick aisles and straight middle aisles. Two examples for such designs are flyingV and fishbone designs for single and dual command operations. In this study, we consider the same layout types under the case of multiple-item pick lists and show that, for both layout types, the routing problem can be solved in polynomial time. We also propose simple heuristics for this problem inspired by those put forward for parallel-aisle warehouses. Our computational results reveal that under certain cases, fishbone design can perform as high as 30% worse than an equivalent parallel-aisle layout, and a modification of the aisle-by-aisle heuristic produces good results compared to other heuristics.

Routing order pickers in a warehouse with a middle aisle

This paper considers a parallel aisle warehouse, where order pickers can change aisles at the ends of every aisle and also at a cross aisle halfway along the aisles. An algorithm is presented that can find shortest order picking tours in this type of warehouses. The algorithm is applicable in warehouse situations with up to three aisle changing possibilities. Average tour length is compared for...

Turnover-Based Storage in Non-Traditional Unit-Load Warehouse Designs

We investigate the effect of assigning the most-active items to the best locations in unitload warehouses with non-traditional aisles. Specifically, we report the performance of flying-V and fishbone designs when products exhibit different velocity profiles. We consider both singleand dual-command operations in a warehouse where receiving and shipping are located at the midpoint of one side of ...

Order-picking workstations for automated warehouses

| This dissertation addresses performance analysis of order-picking workstations for automated warehouses. The first chapter provides a general overview of warehousing and order-picking systems (OPS). A classification of OPS is discussed. Literature regarding endof-aisle OPS, which is the type of system considered in this dissertation, is reviewed in greater detail. Typical issues for this syst...

Layout Design of Multiple Blocks Class-Based Storage Strategy Warehouses

Manual order-picking warehouses are highly influenced by its’ layout design. In fact, layout parameters play the most important role in determining the route length which is responsible for the largest share in a warehouse operating costs. Conventional simulation techniques are not capable to capture the complexities in dynamic systems. Therefore, this paper develops an agent-based model to sim...

Aisle Configurations for Unit-Load Warehouses

Unit-load warehouses are used to store items—typically pallets—that can be stowed or retrieved in a single trip. In the traditional, ubiquitous design, storage racks are arranged to create parallel picking aisles, which force workers to travel rectilinear distances to picking locations. We consider the problem of arranging aisles in new ways to reduce the cost of travel within these warehouses....
